Foundation white in flash photos? How to avoid flashback

Perfect in the mirror, and in the party photo a white face on a darker neck. That’s called flashback, and it’s usually not the colour of your shade but what’s in it.

Where the white cast comes from

Some ingredients reflect the light of a camera flash more strongly than skin. Often named are mineral UV filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and some loose setting powders. In daylight you don’t notice, in direct flash you do.

How to test beforehand

  1. Apply foundation and powder the way you would for the evening.
  2. Take a photo with flash in a dark room, from the front.
  3. Compare face and neck. If your face looks clearly lighter or greyer, something is reflecting.

What helps

  • For the evening, a foundation without mineral sun protection. During the day, outside, sun protection still matters.
  • Work loose powder in thinly and tap off the rest instead of leaving thick layers.
  • Don’t choose a shade lighter than your skin. Flash makes every difference between face and neck more visible.
