Find your shade. Honestly.

Type in the foundation you wear. Copine shows you which shade at other brands really comes closest, from the drugstore dupe to luxury.

  • Your shade isn’t quite right? Type it in anyway. In the result you can go lighter, deeper, less yellow or less pink.
  • No foundation yet? Find a first shade in three steps, right here. The app will measure it exactly later.

  • Calculated, not guessedCopine measures how far apart two colours are. The website and the app calculate the same way.
  • Brand swatches, corrected by youEvery colour value comes from the brand’s swatch. In the app you say after buying whether it fitted. If a shade turns out darker for many, it says so.
  • Says no, tooFor 3 in 100 non-drugstore shades, nothing at the drugstore fits. Then Copine tells you exactly that.
  • Colour before commissionA colour that fits worse never moves up just because a shop pays me commission.

No foundation yet?

Your first shade in three steps.

No camera, no sign-up: pick your skin depth and your undertone, and Copine shows you starting points from the drugstore and beauty stores.

Hold your hand next to the screen in daylight. Pick the swatch that comes closest – not your cheeks, they’re often redder.

How to read the result.

You get a number up to 100 and a clear word with it: 95 to 100 means “fits”, 88 to 94 “just fits”, below that “probably not”. Next to it, one real pair from the catalogue for each.

The app

You don’t know your shade yet?

Then Copine measures your skin tone with the front camera: two seconds at a window is enough. If it’s too dark, your screen becomes the lamp. The photos stay on your phone.

And at the shelf: scan the barcode and instantly see how well exactly that shade fits you.

Recorded from the app itself. Only the camera picture is missing.

  1. Scan

Phone in front of your face, done. The app checks the light first, so a yellow lamp doesn’t get a say.

  2. Compare

Your skin tone against every shade in the catalogue, as a colour value, not by feel and not just “light, medium, deep”.

Behind Copine

Hi, I’m Konstantin.

Copine started as a university project, and I’ve been building it on my own since. Buying foundation online usually means guessing, and in store the shop lighting has a say. Copine calculates instead and tells you when it only just fits.

Is your brand missing, or does a result look odd to you? Write to me: I read every message myself.

The app is coming.

Copine comes to iPhone and Android at the same time. The app speaks six languages and so far knows shops in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the UK. Follow along so you don’t miss the launch.

Until then, the shade finder works right here in your browser, for free and without an account.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What does Copine cost?

Nothing. The website and the app are free and don’t need an account. Copine is funded through partner links to shops: if you buy through one, I get a small commission and the price stays the same for you. Partner links exist for shops in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, and each one is marked. All other shop links earn nothing.

When can I download the app?

Copine is being finished. It comes to the App Store and Google Play at the same time and launches in eleven countries on the same day: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal. The shade finder already works in your browser.

Are photos of me uploaded or stored?

No. The camera images are analysed on your phone and then discarded. Only the measured colour value is stored, so you don’t have to scan again every time. The one exception is the test version before launch: after every scan it sends the measured values and small crops from the camera image to my server (nine patches of skin and a little background, each about 25 × 25 pixels), so I can make the measurement more accurate. They are deleted after 90 days. This also applies to the guest scan. The app tells you so before your first scan.

How does Copine calculate?

Every shade has a colour value. Copine measures the distance between two colours with ΔE2000, the distance measure the colour industry uses, and turns it into a number up to 100: 95 and up “fits” (no difference to the naked eye), 88 to 94 “just fits” (only visible side by side), below that “probably not”. The website and the app calculate the same way.

How accurate is the result?

As accurate as the light and the catalogue data allow. The shade colours come from the brands’ own swatches, not from our own measurements, and it says so everywhere. The app checks the light before the scan and shows how sure it is for every result. Brand swatches are sometimes off, though, and some foundations darken on the skin. So after you buy, the app asks whether the shade fitted, and tells you when many found it darker or lighter. And what is compared is the colour: finish and coverage are shown wherever the brand states them, because a matte foundation stays matte even when the colour is right. Still try a shade before you commit.

Which brands are included?

255 brands, from drugstore to luxury, with foundations, skin tints, BB creams, powder foundations and concealers. The app also knows powder, colour correctors, blush, bronzer, highlighter, contour, lipstick, lip liner and lip gloss, plus mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, brows, lashes, primer, setting sprays and powders, lip care, nails, accessories and make-up removers to browse: 9,064 products in total. All foundations and concealers are in the catalogue. Is your brand missing? Tell me on Instagram.

Where can I buy the matches in the UK or US?

Under every product you’ll find UK and US shops like Boots, Superdrug, Ulta or Sephora first, then the German ones. The UK and US links go to the product page, so pick your shade there. Shade ranges can differ between countries, so check that your shade is listed.

Which shops does the app know?

In Germany drugstores, perfumeries and brand shops; in Austria Notino, Marionnaud and BIPA (with its own brand LOOK BY BIPA); in Switzerland Notino; in France Perfumería Comas; in Spain, Portugal and Italy Stylevana. Plus shops in the UK. The app shows the shops of the country you choose first.

Some shop links are partner links: if you buy through one, I get a commission and the price stays the same for you. Only colour decides which shade fits. Details are in the legal notice (German).
